8.5% renewable energy curtailment in last 12 months due to transmission network constraints and low market prices.

Renewable energy curtailment, or spilled energy, has been growing in recent years, reaching 8.5% of total potential in the last 12 months. It occurs due to transmission network constraints and low market prices. The Integrated System Plan expects up to 20% of renewable generation to be spilled by 2050, equivalent to New South Wales' current consumption. Despite appearing wasteful, it's more economically efficient to build additional renewable capacity than to maximize current usage.
