EU countries unanimously agreed to quit the 1998 Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) over concerns that it protects fossil fuel investments and undermines efforts to fight climate change. The treaty allows energy companies to sue governments over policies that damage their investments. With the EU's exit, member states can now individually decide whether to stay in or leave the treaty.
