EU agrees to exit Energy Charter Treaty, offering member states option to modernize or leave.

The EU has reached a deal to exit the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), with a proposal offering member states the option to modernise the international trade agreement protecting fossil fuel investments. The EU and Euratom can leave the treaty, but member states must obtain EU authorisation to remain, with failure to do so resulting in quitting the treaty. The deal requires approval next week, with the ECT conference scheduled for November.
