China is capitalizing on cheaper coal and natural gas prices internationally to restock power fuel supplies ahead of the hot summer season. Gas imports increased by 21% and coal purchases by 13% in the first four months of the year, defying predictions of a moderate import decrease. Domestic production of coal has dropped for the first time since Q3 2020, leading to greater reliance on imports as safety scrutiny and quality depletion affect domestic coal mining.
