The number of fish on the US overfishing list reached an all-time low in 2023, according to federal officials. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that 94% of fish stocks are not subject to overfishing, an improvement from the previous year. Important fish stocks such as the Gulf of Maine and Cape Hatteras stock of Atlantic mackerel and the Gulf of Mexico stock of cubera snapper were removed from the list.
