Sperm whale communication study reveals a complex, phonetic-like system similar to human language.
Scientists have discovered the basic elements of sperm whale communication, revealing a complex, phonetic-like system similar to human language. The study, published in Nature Communications, analyzed over 8,700 instances of sperm whale clicks, known as codas, and identified four basic components that make up a phonetic alphabet. The understanding of this language could provide insights into their complex social bonds and improve conservation efforts to protect sperm whales from threats such as ship collisions and noise pollution.
