Portugal's President admits responsibility for slave trade crimes, calls for reparations.

Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has stated that the country is responsible for crimes committed during the transatlantic slave trade and the colonial era, and has suggested a need for reparations. Over 12.5 million Africans were kidnapped and forced into slavery for centuries, with Portugal trafficking nearly 6 million, more than any other European nation. Despite this, Portugal has not yet confronted its past regarding its role in the slave trade, and it is not widely taught in schools.
