In Brazil, the Bank of Brazil apologizes for historical links to slavery.
Brazil is grappling with its historical legacy of slavery, as calls for reparations grow louder. At a forum in Rio de Janeiro, the executive manager for institutional relations at a Brazilian state bank apologized on behalf of the Bank of Brazil for its links to the slave trade. Over half the country's population identifies as Black or biracial, and there has been an increasing acknowledgment and examination of the country's past. Public prosecutors have recently started investigating Bank of Brazil for its historical connections to the slave trade, challenging Brazil's tradition of resisting confrontations with this difficult history.
