2 million married couples targeted by HMRC for Marriage Allowance, risking unexpected income tax bills.

HMRC plans to target 2 million married couples and civil partners who claim Marriage Allowance, a tax benefit for couples where one partner earns less than £12,570. Pensions campaigner Ros Altmann warns these couples could face unexpected income tax bills, as the number of pensioners liable for tax has doubled since 2010. Couples who use the marriage allowance will have an even lower personal allowance of £11,310, putting them at risk of being liable for tax without knowing.
