2023 Australian Bureau of Statistics report: Annual food consumption declines 1.9% to 14.8 million tonnes.

For the first time on record, Australia has seen a decline in annual food consumption, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Total food purchases decreased by 1.9% from 15.1 million tonnes in the previous year to 14.8 million tonnes in the 12 months to June 2023. Vegetable consumption dropped the most with a decrease of 14 grams per person, followed by fruit and milk products. Chicken dishes like nuggets saw a slight increase, while processed meat consumption decreased.
