26-year-old Jose Luis Mares III was sentenced to 18 years in state prison for trying to kill his wife at Coronado Beach on February 24, 2021. He choked her, attempted to drag her into the surf, and buried her in the sand. The victim managed to call 911, and officers found her badly injured. Mares pleaded guilty to attempted murder and admitted to inflicting great bodily injury during a domestic dispute.
