Study finds prolonged use of certain progestogen hormone drugs increases risk of intracranial meningiomas.

A new study warns that prolonged use of certain progestogen hormone drugs, like medrogestone and medroxyprogesterone acetate injection, increases the risk of developing intracranial meningiomas, a type of brain tumor. This is the first study to assess the risk associated with progestogens used by millions of women worldwide. The research, published in The BMJ, investigated the association of progestogen medications and risk of meningioma, finding an association for high doses of certain types of progestogens; however, causality cannot be determined in an observational study.
