South Africa's Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, has called for the urgent transformation of the biodiversity sector, aiming to include rural communities and previously disadvantaged individuals in the biodiversity economy, conservation, and sustainable use. This transformation is crucial for sustainable rural socio-economic development, addressing poverty, inequality, and unemployment, and requires new approaches like investment in community land for conservational purposes and opening up value chains. The inaugural Biodiversity Economy and Investment Indaba is set to address these issues in March 2024.
