IMO approves new environmental protections for the Canadian Arctic, establishing a new Emissions Control Area with stricter sulphur fuel limits.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved new environmental protections for the Canadian Arctic, expected to reduce emissions that accelerate Arctic sea ice melting. The IMO agreed to establish a new Emissions Control Area, requiring ships in the Arctic to use fuel containing less than 0.1% sulphur, a further restriction to current rules around heavy fuel oil. The measures will enter into force 16 months after the IMO's next meeting in the fall.
