Researchers suggest that low-sulfur shipping rules enforced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Jan 2020, which reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by 80%, may have inadvertently exacerbated climate change by boosting global average temperatures, as stated in a recent study. Tianle Yuan, lead author of the study, describes this impact as "inadvertent geoengineering."
