FMC closes one investigation on Canadian ballast water rules affecting U.S. ships, continues another.

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has concluded one investigation into Canadian ballast water regulations affecting U.S. ships in the Great Lakes, but a second investigation continues. The closed case involved six U.S. ships initially expected to comply with new Canadian regulations by September 2024; however, these ships were either exempted or found unnecessary to comply. The ongoing investigation will assess whether Canadian policies unfairly impact U.S. vessels operating in the U.S.-Canada trade.
