Pope Francis appointed Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Battersby as the new leader of Wisconsin's Diocese of La Crosse, replacing Bishop William Callahan, who retired at 73. Battersby, 63, will become the 11th bishop to lead the diocese, which spans 19 counties in Wisconsin and serves over 135,000 Catholic faithful through 156 parishes and 65 schools. His predecessor, Callahan, is retiring for health reasons, having led the diocese since 2010.
