2023: China experiences a 10.7% decline in maternal mortality rate to 15.1 per 100k and a 16.7% drop in infant mortality to 4.

China's National Health Commission reports a continued decline in maternal and infant mortality rates in 2023. The maternal mortality rate dropped 10.7% to 15.1 per 100,000, while infant mortality rate decreased 16.7% to 4.5 per 1,000. In response, China has established 3,491 emergency medical centers for critical pregnant women and 3,321 centers for newborns. However, numerous hospitals have ceased providing newborn delivery services due to a significant drop in birth rates, causing concern among policymakers who are trying to encourage young couples to have children amid a rapidly aging population.
