Python farming offers a potentially sustainable meat source worldwide, as found by a study in Scientific Reports, with Burmese and reticulated pythons in Thailand and Vietnam growing rapidly and requiring less food than other animals.
Python farming could provide a more sustainable source of meat worldwide, according to a recent study published in Scientific Reports. Researchers found that Burmese and reticulated pythons, farmed in Thailand and Vietnam, grew rapidly over a year and required less food than other farmed products, such as chicken, beef, pork, and salmon. The snakes were fed a mix of locally sourced food including wild-caught rodents, pork byproducts, and fish pellets, and gained up to 1.6 ounces a day. The study suggests that python farming could offer a solution to rising food insecurity around the globe, exacerbated by climate change.
