800 participants in Florida's Python Challenge combat invasive Burmese pythons threatening native wildlife.
Florida combats invasive Burmese pythons in Everglades with initiatives like the Python Challenge, where 800 people participated this year. The population increased after import as exotic pets in the mid-90s and threatens native wildlife, as well as posing a risk to gators. A Tufts University study warns that climate change could make the entire US hospitable to Burmese pythons by 2050. Over 14,000 pythons have been removed, but the exact number remains unknown.
