The European Union has approved a law imposing methane emissions limits on Europe's oil and gas imports from 2030, aiming to pressure international suppliers to reduce leaks of the potent greenhouse gas. Methane is the primary component of natural gas and the second-biggest driver of climate change after carbon dioxide. From 2030, the EU will impose "maximum methane intensity values" on fossil fuels placed on the European market; the European Commission will design exact methane limits by that date, with importers of oil and gas that flout the limit facing financial penalties.
