European Data Protection Supervisor orders European Commission to halt data transfer to Microsoft due to breach of EU privacy rules.

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) ruled that the European Commission's use of Microsoft software breached EU privacy rules and failed to implement adequate safeguards for personal data transferred to non-EU countries. The EDPS ordered the Commission to halt data transfer to the US company and its subsidiaries located in third countries without EU privacy deals, with a deadline of Dec. 9. The decision follows a three-year investigation triggered by concerns about the transfer of personal data to the United States after Edward Snowden's revelations in 2013.
