Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha announced the gazettement of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) on March 8th, introducing a 2.75% health insurance deduction. The government will cover costs for low-income earners. The new fund aims to address corruption issues and improve service delivery through the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa). By March 1, 2024, every Kenyan will contribute to the scheme, with the government covering costs for poor citizens unable to afford Sh300 monthly membership fees.
