5-time Iditarod champion Dallas Seavey was forced to kill a moose that injured his dog team during the race on Monday morning. The incident occurred about 14 miles from the Skwentna checkpoint, en route to Finger Lake. Iditarod rules state that if a big game animal like a moose, caribou or buffalo is killed in self-defense, the musher must gut the animal and report it to race officials.
