BirdLife Malta has reported that over 2,600 registered finch trapping sites operated in Luxembourg last autumn, with many violating the law. The organization found that even at legally operating sites, finches were caught and kept without being released, and estimates at least 51,400 finches were trapped. BirdLife Malta also claims that the European Court of Justice-approved scientific research derogation has been abused, fueling illegal trapping and wildlife trade.
