College dropout rates increased to 15% in the 2021/2022 academic year, with mental health issues, financial stress, and long commutes cited as major factors.

College dropout rates have risen to 15% in 2021/2022, up from 12% in the previous academic year, according to the Higher Education Authority. The increase in non-progression rates is attributed to students facing challenges such as mental health issues, financial stress, and long commutes. The 2021/2022 figures show that almost 7,000 students did not progress to the second year of their course. The non-progression rate was highest among those studying Level 7 courses (31%), followed by Level 6 students (25%) and Level 8 (14%).
