Nissan plans to launch a small-scale driverless ride service in Japan by 2027, aiming to offer Level 4 autonomous driving services in three or four municipalities, including rural areas, during the financial year starting in April 2027. The company will initially conduct a trial with remodeled Serena minivans in Yokohama at Level 2 autonomy, with safety drivers on board. Nissan's rival manufacturers, such as Honda, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, and Toyota, are also exploring driverless services as Japan's population rapidly ages.
