Gulf Shores lifeguards prepare for Spring Break with a full staff after a 60% increase in water rescues due to rip currents; Rip Current Awareness Week aims to educate the public on their dangers.

Gulf Shores lifeguards prepared for Spring Break with a full staff, following a 60% increase in water rescues last year due to swimmers caught in rip currents. Rip Current Awareness Week (Feb 26 - Mar 1) aims to educate the public on the dangers of rip currents, which have caused more deaths than hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, and flooding combined along the Alabama and Florida Panhandle coasts. From 2002 to 2023, 213 rip current-related deaths were reported.
