B.C.'s gifted students program paused over mental health concerns.
The University Transition Program for Gifted Students (UTPGS), which offers an accelerated path to university for academically talented students aged 13-15, has been temporarily paused due to mental health concerns. The program enrolls 20 students annually and provides a two-year preparation program for early entrance to university studies. It was established by B.C. 's education ministry, the Vancouver School Board, and the University of British Columbia. Students who complete the UTPGS program can enter UBC, bypassing regular secondary education, which takes five years. The program has announced it will pause admissions while it reviews concerns.
