University of North Texas President Neal Smatresk has announced he will step down this summer after serving in the role for ten years. In a letter to staff and faculty, Smatresk stated that he plans to continue teaching biology at the institution. During his tenure as president, UNT achieved Carnegie Classification Tier One research university status in 2015, enrollment grew, and new buildings and facilities were added to campus. Smatresk's decision to step down comes after he oversaw significant growth and development at UNT.
