Boeing withdrew a safety waiver request for the 737 Max 7, delaying its certification due to an engine inlet de-icing issue, following a near-catastrophic event and lawmaker pressure.

Boeing has withdrawn its request for a safety exemption needed to certify its new 737 MAX 7 model, after facing severe criticism following a door plug incident on a 737 Max aircraft. The company had asked federal regulators to allow it to begin delivering the 737 MAX 7 even though it did not meet a safety standard designed to prevent part of the engine housing from overheating and breaking off during flight. The safety standard concerns an anti-icing system that affects other models of the 737 Max. Boeing now plans to incorporate an engineering solution during the certification process.
