As a result of a ground-breaking gene therapy procedure at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 11-year-old Aissam Dam has developed the ability to hear for the first time. For those who have hearing loss due to genetic mutations, this treatment offers hope as it is the first of its kind to be used in the US. Though this particular gene mutation is extremely rare, the treatment addressed a very rare abnormality in a single gene, and it represents a step forward in the field of gene therapy for hearing loss.
