North Korea fired nearly 200 artillery shells into waters off its western coast, causing an emergency evacuation order for civilians on the South Korean western border islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong. The South Korean military staged live-fire drills in response, with the Joint Chiefs of Staff detecting the firings from Jangsan Cape and Deungsan Cape in the southwestern coastal areas.
