Tests show electric cars lose up to 40% range in cold weather, with some models faring better than others.

Recent tests by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) reveal that electric vehicles (EVs) in cold weather lose up to 40% of their battery range compared to official estimates. In sub-zero temperatures, the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Polestar 2 performed best, losing only 14% of their range, while the Toyota bZ4X lost 37%. The CAA recommends preconditioning the vehicle, using heated seats, and optimizing charging practices to improve EV performance in winter.
