CNA Financial reports Q4 net income plummeting to $21M due to a hefty pension settlement loss.

CNA Financial Corp. saw its Q4 2024 net income fall to $21 million from $367 million in 2023, largely due to a $290 million pension settlement loss. Despite this, the company reported a $178 million underwriting gain in its property/casualty division, though catastrophe losses rose by 26% to $45 million. The combined ratio for P/C operations increased to 93.1% due to higher catastrophe losses. Net written premiums grew 10% to $2.8 billion in Q4. For the full year, net income dropped 20.41% to $959 million, while property/casualty premiums increased 8% to $10.176 billion.
