Bovine TB detected in South Dakota, prompting efforts to trace and contain the disease.

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) has been detected in a cow-calf herd in Kingsbury County, South Dakota, following the discovery of an infected steer in Hamlin County. State Veterinarian Dr. Beth Thompson is working with USDA officials to trace the source and contain the disease. Bovine TB is not considered a threat to food safety due to strict pasteurization and meat inspection standards in the US. South Dakota has been recognized as TB-free since 1982.
