During New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, British Columbia Highway Patrol apprehended 19 impaired drivers on Vancouver Island, issuing prohibitions ranging from 24 hours to 90 days. Officers conducted checkpoints and patrols, sacrificing their time with family to ensure road safety. ICBC reports that around 61 people die annually due to impaired driving, accounting for about 21% of car crash fatalities.
