Conservationists released 1,329 rare snails on Deserta Grande to aid ecosystem recovery.

Conservationists have released 1,329 critically endangered snails on Deserta Grande, an island near Madeira, after they were found on its cliffs and housed in zoos in the UK and France. Chester Zoo created a special habitat for the snails, and 60 were first released on a nearby wildlife refuge, Bugio Island. The snails, key to the ecosystem, are part of a recovery plan that could lead to further releases.
