After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Damascus and the takeover by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), pubs and liquor stores initially closed due to fears of a ban on alcohol sales. However, after four days with no crackdown, these venues began cautiously reopening. The interim HTS-led government has stressed tolerance for all social and religious groups, easing some concerns among pub owners and customers.
