U.S. sees decline in STIs like gonorrhea, syphilis, but syphilis in newborns hits 1992 levels.

The United States is seeing a slowdown in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea and syphilis, with cases declining in 2023. Despite this, over 2.4 million STIs were still reported, with chlamydia remaining the most common. The number of syphilis cases, however, reached its highest point since 1950, and congenital syphilis in newborns has surged to levels last seen in 1992. The CDC attributes some improvements to new preventive methods and increased testing and treatment, but warns that more work is needed to combat the ongoing epidemic.
