US maternal syphilis cases have tripled in eight years, with the highest increase in South Dakota, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
Syphilis cases in the US have surged, with women giving birth three times more likely to have the disease today compared to eight years ago, according to the CDC. The rise in maternal syphilis rates is highest in South Dakota, Mississippi, and Louisiana, with case rates increasing over 400% in some states since 2016. Syphilis was close to being eliminated in 2000, but it has since become a part of the country's sexually transmitted disease epidemic.
