A breast cancer patient co-founded an organization to address gaps in support for metastatic breast cancer patients in Australia.

Dr. Andrea Smith, a 49-year-old stage four breast cancer patient, was shocked to find a lack of support services for metastatic breast cancer after her diagnosis. Initially believing such services were comprehensive, she discovered significant gaps. Smith co-founded Metastatic Breast Cancer Action Australia to drive accurate data on the number of patients, push for specialty services, and build a mutual support network. The Cancer Institute of NSW estimates 24,000 Australians live with metastatic breast cancer, a figure thought to be underrepresented.
