2019 Moroccan marital rape conviction overturned by Court of Cassation.

On October 10, Morocco's Court of Cassation overturned a landmark 2019 conviction for marital rape, which was the first of its kind in the country. By sending the case back to the Appeals Court, the ruling negates progress on women's rights. Morocco's penal code lacks explicit criminalization of marital rape, and a 2018 law on violence against women also does not address it. The UN advises legal changes to ensure protection for victims of marital sexual violence.
