The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is constructing a sill in the Mississippi River near Myrtle Grove to combat saltwater intrusion threatening drinking water in Plaquemines Parish for the third year. Seasonal low river levels allow saltwater to advance upstream, increasing the risk to freshwater intakes. Last year, an initial sill was built, but the new sill aims to slow or arrest the advance of saltwater.
