Heavy rainfall in Spokane caused a hillside collapse, threatening the Spokane River's water quality.

Heavy rainfall in Spokane caused a hillside collapse near Downriver Park, breaching the Cochran Basin stormwater system. This has diverted stormwater into channels by the Spokane River, raising concerns about water quality. The city is monitoring the site to prevent sediment from entering the river and plans to repair the damage next season. Despite this incident, the CSO system has managed to keep over 99% of stormwater out of the Spokane River since 2022. Spokane Riverkeeper is urging the city to address the issue to protect aquatic life.
