1986-batch railway mechanical engineer Satish Kumar has become the first Dalit to head the Indian Railway Board, appointed as Chairman and CEO by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. He will assume the position on September 1 and hold office until his superannuation, with a one-year extension on contract. Over his 38-year career, Kumar has significantly contributed to railway safety and has been involved with the new Vande Bharat sleeper coaches and Vande Bharat Metro trains projects.
