The Granby Zoo in Quebec released 140 endangered baby spiny softshell turtles into a river near Lake Champlain, near the U.S. border, as part of a conservation project led by the zoo. The turtles were hatched in an incubator, away from predators and flooding, to give them a better chance of survival. The zoo plans to release 5,000 individuals, including other species, by 2030. The Granby Zoo's conservation efforts also include working with local conservation groups to protect habitats of various species. The spiny softshell turtle is considered an "umbrella species," meaning that protecting its habitat also helps the survival of other species such as birds, frogs, and fish.
