The Royal Society of Chemistry, Institute of Physics, Royal Society of Biology, and Association for Science Education have proposed a primary school science curriculum that includes "essential experiences" such as eating ice lollies, playing musical instruments, and planting vegetables to help children relate to scientific concepts and reduce inequalities in STEM education.
The report suggests that children with limited first-hand experiences are at a disadvantage and that these concrete experiences provide a foundation for abstract learning in secondary school.
The UK government's curriculum and assessment review, due to be published in 2025, will consider these recommendations and take into account the views of experts, parents, teachers, and leaders.
