The NFL's new dynamic kickoff rule is showing positive results in preseason games, increasing the average starting position after kickoffs to 28.3 yards, a 4.4-yard improvement. However, the NFL's Chief Football Administrative Officer Dawn Aponte states that moving the touchback on kickoffs to the 35-yard line is "not likely" this season, as the rule is being evaluated throughout the season on a one-year trial basis. The NFL introduced the rule in order to reduce concussions and injuries related to kickoffs, which were four times higher than scrimmage plays.
