Lake City, South Carolina has unanimously passed a hate crime ordinance targeting offenses based on race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical/mental disabilities, or national origin. Penalties for violating the ordinance include fines of up to $500 or a 30-day sentence. Mayor Yamekia Robinson hopes this local law will encourage state senators to implement a state-wide hate crime law.
